BOLIVIA: Morales dealt drugs blow

A drug-smuggling scandal implicating a top security adviser and former head of Bolivia's counter-narcotics force (Felcn) is proving a headache for President Evo Morales. As well as raising awkward questions regarding the extent of links between drug-traffickers and government officials, it is providing the US, the most vehement critic of Morales's “coca sí­, cocaí­na no" policy, with more apparent evidence of his failing battle against drugs. It comes on the heels of a recent admission by Morales that Colombia's Norte del Valle gang is now present in Bolivia [WR-11-08]. The US is linking both developments to Morales' ejection of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in 2008.
